The Ferrari F430

Ferrari has always made some of the most exciting and desirable sports cars in the world.  Stunning body work by Pininfarina, exotic materials, high revving engines with a spine-tingling exhaust note, and lightning fast transmissions characterize the latest cars from Maranello.  Yet for the stratospheric specific output of the 4.3L V8, modern electronics mean that the car is happy to cruise in traffic without complaint-something that can’t be said of some of the Marques previous models.  It is also worth noting that the F430 is a much less maintenance intensive car than earlier Ferraris as it has a timing chain which means that there is no periodic timing belt replacement-an expensive engine-out job in many cases.

The F430 replaced the F360 in 2005 which was in production since 1999.  The 360 was the first all aluminium Ferrari and was a dramatic advance over the previous tube-frame cars, which had nowhere near the chassis rigidity of the new models.  The F430 built upon the 360 with a displacement increase and significantly more power (and a timing chain) and a vastly improved F1 transmission with quicker shifting and improved low speed maneuvering.  It also introduced the Mannitino which is an alloy switch on the steering wheel and controls the intervention of the electronic stability control systems, the operation of the Electronic Differential which is a development from Ferrari’s F1 car, the exhaust routing, throttle mapping and suspension settings.  A Ferrari F430 is about 20 seconds quicker around the Nurburgring than the F360.

About This Ferrari F430

This car was purchased from Ferrari of Vancouver and delivered into Calgary to a multiple Ferrari owner. This car has all the “right” options including the power Daytona style seats with Rosso Stitching, Scuderia fender shields and red calipers.  List price in 2007 was $285k.  This Ferrari has enjoyed mostly fast highway miles as the previous owner has toured with the car extensively.  This type of use-getting the engine up to operating temperature, burning off all the condensation and clearing the combustion chambers and catalytic converters of carbon deposits-makes these cars run properly have have fewer problems.  Ultra low km Garage Queens can be riddled with problems from non-use.  This is a Ferrari that is ready to be driven and enjoyed.

About the Jaguar E-Type

The Jaguar E Type of course needs little introduction, and is generally recognized as

one of the most beautiful, charismatic and exciting sports cars ever made.  The late

(great) Henry Manney’s quote; “The Greatest Crumpet Collector Known To Man”, sums it up

the best.

The Jaguar E Type was introduced at the Earls Court Motorshow in 1961 and became a

legend.  It was capable of near 150mph, when most cars of the day would struggle to

reach half that speed.  And it was unspeakably beautiful, and relatively affordable.

The first Series One Cars had a 3.8L engine and a Moss 4 speed gearbox with a  non-

synchro first gear.  The gearbox was later updated to an all synchro unit, and the

engine bored out to 4.2L. Series 1 3.8 cars were produced from 1961 to 1964, and the S1

4.2 cars from 1965 to Sept 1967. 

Series 11/2 cars, as they were retrospectively named, were an interm car that was part

Series 1 and part Series 2.  They were 1967 and 1968 models.  The bonnet and doors

differed slightly, and the glass headlight covered were deleted, and there were several

safety related changes.

Series 2 cars differed more considerably to meet with US Federal regulations, with

alterations to the bonnet with a greater air intake opening with larger bumper blades,

and different rear lights.  The dashboard received rocker switches as opposed to the

toggle switches from the S1.  Power from the 4.2L straight 6 was considerably reduced,

the North American cars receiving twin Stromberg Carbs instead of the triple SU’s used

for the European market.  Series 2 cars were produced in 1968 t0 1970. 

Over the years, the E-type had lost power and gained weight due mostly to US Federal

regulations.  The S3 E-Type with its advanced and supurb 5.3L V12 restored the E-Type’s

performance back to a near 150mph car.  Though the engine was much larger, because it

used an aluminium alloy block, it was only 86lb heavier than the outgoing 6 cylinder. 

Introduced in 1971, the S3 was built on the longer 105 inch wheelbase of the 2+2 car,

and was more a grand touring machine than the earlier cars. The seats and door panels

were new, and more luxurious than previous models.  North American cars came with

headrests.  The doors were also much longer aiding ingress and egress, and there was an

additional 9” of storage space behind the front seats.  

More changes were made to the lighting, and changes were made to the bodywork to aid

the cooling of the large engine.  The air intake was considerably larger, and for the

first time sported a grille. The bonnet was given a large horizontal scoop to also

assist cooling.  The fenders were flared to accommodate the larger track and the wheel

arches were widened slightly. The Series 3 saw the introduction of the Lucas Opus Mark

II electronic ignition system. 

The last 50 E-Type S3’s, with the exception of the last one, were all painted black,

and given a a dashboard plaque stamped with the chassis number to signify that they

were one of the last 50 cars.

About this car

This V12 E-Type was originally sold to a doctor in Victoria, BC where the car stayed

until it was sold to a lawyer in Kelowna, BC at approximately 10,000 miles.  The second

owner put on about 4,000miles in about 4 years.  The third owner, also in Kelowna,

purchased the car with about 14,000miles on it, drove it for a couple of years to

approximately 24,000 miles, had some trouble with it, and then put it under a tarp for

about 7 years.   The 4th owner, living in Edmonton AB,  purchased the car in May 1994

with 23,913 miles, and commissioned a restoration of the car with the firm “Peter &

Sons” of Courtney BC. 

From the period of approximately June 1994 to June 1995 Peter & Co gave the car a

cosmetic restoration with some major mechanic work.  Basically the front of the car was

disassembled and restored as necessary.  It appears that the engine long block was

cleaned up and re-sealed but not taken apart, and the heads and carbs were rebuilt. 

Fuel and ignition systems were rebuilt.  The rear subframe was dropped from the car and

the brakes and suspension was rebuilt. The front tube frame was sandblasted and

prepared for paint. A new clutch was installed.  A new interior kit and new top were

installed.  The car received a colour change from Sable Brown to Signal Red.  The

invoices to Peter & Co total more than $23,000.

After the work from Peter & Sons was almost complete the owner of the car died, and

left his widow to look after finishing the car, and selling it.

Peter & Sons completed the work, shipped the car to Edmonton, and the widow placed the

car at the 1997 Okotoks Car Auction.  It failed to make reserve, but the car was sold,

post auction,  to the current owner in Calgary.   He has put approximately 10,000 miles

on the car since then; the current mileage is estimated at about 35,000 miles due to

the fact that the odometer has never worked during his ownership.

Shortly after the car was purchased it began to smoke, and it was taken to British Auto

specialists who took the engine apart and rebuilt the bottom end.  The engine work, and

a new steering rack came to $10,834.

In approximately 2002 the car was in a minor front end collision, and the bonnet was

damaged.  The car was taken to Ernst at Exotic Cars International, who suggested that

purchasing a new bonnet would be easier than repairing the damaged one.  A NOS bonnet

was found, at a a cost of $usd9,000 and as the signal paint was judged as good, but not

great, the entire car was taken down to bare metal and given a high-quality respray in

Signal Red at a cost of an additional 11,000.  Ernst spent a considerable amount of

time aligning the new bonnet to achieve factory or better shut lines all around.  As

the doors have never been off the car, and no body work was ever required, the shut

lines around the doors are excellent as well.  This is rare for an E-Type, and the

single greatest measure of a good car.

In the 10 years since the car has been serviced at the Jaguar dealership in Calgary,

Charles English Motorcars, and has received a gearbox rebuild an annual servicing. The

starter, battery, belts, hoses and various other consumables have been replaced

recently. The recent service history of the car has been pulled from the dealership and

will be included with the car, as is the previous restoration documentation. 

As the car sits today it looks like an excellent correct restoration that has held up

well, or an extremely well preserved original.  The paint looks fresh with no

noticeable scratches or dents.  The upholstery and top are in very good to excellent

condition, with only slight wear to the seat base, commensurate with the mileage.  Dash

and carpets are excellent.  Gauges all work with the exception of the odometer, and the

tachometer takes a couple of taps before it springs to life.  The chrome is original

and excellent.  Tires are recent.  It could benefit from a thorough detail, but the

current owner enjoys driving the car, not showing it.  The engine bay looks like an

engine bay for instance, but it could be cleaned up for show.

This is an honest car with low mileage and continuous history. Over the course of the

last 15 years and 10,000 miles every mechanical component has been taken off the car

and completely refurbished.  This was a rust-free, damage free car has had a quality

paint job, and the bright work and trim are all there and in good shape. The extended

wheelbase V12 convertible is the most comfortable and most practical of the E-Type

range, yet still offers tremendous performance.

This Porsche 911 C4 has benefited from over $60,000 worth performance and cosmetic upgrades that have transformed the car into a RUF RGT replica.  RUF is the German Porsche tuning firm that rose to prominence in the 1980’s with their “Yellowbird” 911 that earned the cover of Road and Track Magazine with the title “Fastest Car in the World”.  It achieved the highest top speed in a comparison test at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track, at 211mph.  RUF modified the car substantially with a low drag body, its own manufacture 5 speed transmission, and a twin turbo installation giving 470hp.  Check out this YouTube of the RUF Yellowbird at the Nurburgring in 1987 !  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Thomd4BQg
The 2,600lb Yellowbird lapped the Nurburgring in 8:25sec, which at the time bettered the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40!!   13 years later in 2000 a stock 300hp 3000lb Porsche 996 was able to lap in the same time, with considerably less drama, demonstrating the rapid progress of suspension, braking and aerodynamics at Porsche. 

Since then, RUF has continued to occupy the top echelon of German car tuners, and its cars and performance accessories are showcased on some of the world’s most desirable Porsches.  Typically RUF takes a new Porsche, adds new bodypanels, interior, suspension, engine and drivetrain modifications and adds its own serial number.  RUF Sports cars can sell for more than double the price of the donor car.  RUF can modify Porsche normally aspirated engines, as well as offer supercharged or turbocharged installations on 2wd or 4wd platforms.

This Porshe 911 C4 was sold new in Canada and traded in for a Mercedes in 2005, where it was then sold as a used car for $80,000 and with 40,000km.  The second owner invested a tremendous amount of time and more than $60,000 with the help of Tunerworks-Calgary’s most respected Tuner shop.  The goal was to make the car a RUF RGT replica.

A Supercharger installation was decided upon as it wouldn’t require the engine internals to be modified, and the car could run on the stock compression ratio.   A supercharger produces boost, in this case 6psi at sea level,  linearly with the revs of the engine, with peak boost at redline.   A turbo will produce typically higher boost pressure at the torque peak which would be at approximately 3,000rpm, a speed at which the engine reaches often.  A reliable Turbo installation would require modification to the pistons and head to change the compression ratio.

After considerable research the VF Engineering Vortech V2 Centrifugal Supercharger kit from Evolution Motorsports in Anaheim California was chosen.  The kit includes the OEM Porsche GT2 Radiator functioning as an intercooler with a Bosch hi-flow water pump.  This Porsche also sports a Supersprint exhaust with stainless test pipes.  This powertrain produces approximately 425hp, which is about the same as a 996 Turbo, yet this car weighs 300lbs less and has a narrower, lower drag body.

This VF supercharger installation has been on the car for approximately 50,000 and the car behaves perfectly with instant start up, steady idle and it pulls cleanly throughout the rev range.  The car doesn’t smoke, even at start up, and consumes no oil.  Having been driven in Calgary, in the thinner air, the boost pressure has been limited to approximately 4psi at redline, meaning that the engine has been only lightly boosted and relatively unstressed.  Before the car was put away for the winter, the previous owner had Tunerworks change out the stock supercharger pulley for a smaller diameter, to bring the boost back up to the stock 6psi, but the car has had no miles on this boost pressure and it could easily be reverted should the car go back to sea level.

The car received RUF lowering springs, from RAC Performance in Texas, the US distributor for RUF products.  Work’s Brombacher 3 piece forged rims were purchased with Continental Sport Contact 2 tires, sized 235-35-19 front  and 275-30-19 rear.  From Weissach in Vancouver, the Canadian RUF distributor and Porshe dealer, the full RUF RGT bodykit was purchased and it was expertly painted and installed by Maranello Auto Body in Calgary.  The Seal Grey Porsche paint matches perfectly and the panel gaps are factory consistent.  The kit included front and rear bumper covers, side sills, and the rear wing with air intakes.
 
Inside the car, RUF sill plates, floor mats and a shift knob were installed.  On the exterior RUF badges replace the Porsche emblems on the front trunk and rear deck lid.

This Porsche has a fresh clutch, along with the flywheel. It has been recently serviced, and needs nothing.   It is an accident free car, and has had no paintwork apart from the RUF body kit.  There are no scratches, door dings, or curb rash. The interior remains in excellent shape as is the glass.

Included with the price of the car is a complete service file, neatly organized, and with copies of magazine articles on similar supercharged Porsches.  All the original parts were kept, and are also included.

1973 Chevrolet Camaro RS.  Last of the split bumper. 350ci, automatic. This car has been repainted, interior redone and brakes changed. This car is in excellent shape and drives superb. The engine is numbers matching and all original. This car has always been well maintained.

Restoration Notes: This car was purchased by the current owner in 1981.  Over the next two years, the car was completely rebuilt – every part that could possibly be removed was removed and replaced or refurbished and reassembled.  The original 383 engine was replaced with a 440 and parts were selected with racing in mind, although the car has never been raced.   The engine was balanced and professionally assembled using TRW pistons, a moderately bumpy Competition Cam and Speed Pro hydraulic lifters.  Other mechanicals include Holley 750DP carb, Edelbrock Torker intake, high-stall converter, NOS nitrous system (never filled or used), Hurst Line-Lock, Holley electric fuel pump, Moroso deep oil pan and much more.  The engine has not been dyno tested, but based on the build specifications, power is expected to be in the 450 hp range.  Custom outlets have been added to the underside of the gas tank in place of the stock outlet system.  The battery has been relocated to the trunk and a master battery shut-off switch has been added at the front of the car.   The 8-3/4″ posi rear-end has 4.56:1 gears currently installed – a second center unit (incomplete, but including good usable 3.23:1 gears, which were on the car in the past) is included.  All body panels on the car are original – the only major rust on the car in 1982 was on both rear quarter panels, and they were repaired by welding in new steel, not by excessive use of body filler.  Both the original build tag from under the hood and the original owner’s manual are included. On the appearance side, there are lots of Earl’s lines and chrome accessories under the hood.  All of the chrome on the vehicle has been blacked out but is in good condition and could easily be restored to chrome.  Paint is Sikkens single-stage enamel (Porsche Red) and includes custom hand-painted Roadrunner images and pinstriping.  Despite being over 15 years old, the paint shows only a couple of minor blemishes.  The car was originally a bench seat car with a column shift but was converted to bucket seats and a console shift prior to 1981.  Racing bucket seats and a Hurst Lightning Rod shifter were installed as part of the rebuilding process.  The car was driven semi-regularly until 1996 and has been stored inside since restoration was completed in 1985.  In 2008, more than $5,000 was invested to take care of all storage-related issues – new rear tires were installed, brakes and seals were redone and the outdated Stinger electronic ignition system was replaced with a new MSD system.  Professionally appraised at over $40,000.

History Notes: Current owner purchased in 1981.  Restoration completed 1985.  In storage with intermittent use since 1996.  Mileage: 119,000 at purchase in 1981  122,000 after restoration in 1985  133,000 today.
